Hi there, my name is Alex Webster and I’m the Founder of EngGame.

I’ve been in recruitment for 17 years. I spent the first 12 years in agencies. The last 5 years have been a mixture of being fully embedded at Klarna and in house at Plaid. At Klarna I led teams and built pipelines from scratch. At Plaid I was hired as the first tech recruiter in Europe.

My role at Plaid was sadly taken by the new pandemic sweeping the globe. Not a virus this time, but mass tech lay-offs. I, along with so many recruiters, pondered what to do next.

I realised that because tech startups are now optimising for profitability instead of growth, companies would be changing the way they looked at headcount planning and recruitment spend.

I’ve worked in agencies, as an embedded talent partner and in-house. Each approach to recruitment has its strengths and weaknesses. EngGame came about from some key questions.

What if you could take the best parts of each and combine them to fit the customer’s exact needs?

Could you continue to adapt them to fit the customer’s needs as they changed over time?

Why we do what we do

I was sitting at a table not too long ago at a company retreat, surrounded by Product Managers. They were sharing their individual stories detailing how they came to be where they are today. 

When it came to my turn, one of the PMs was keen to understand why I chose recruitment, but more importantly why I stayed. 

My answer was something along the lines of the following; 

“One day, in the near future, I’ll walk into our office and there will be a bank of desks filled with the team that I hired. They’ll be building your products and that will improve the lives of millions of end users across Europe.” 

It was a bit of a lightbulb moment for this particular PM. He simply smiled and said “that’s actually very cool”. 

That little story is only half of the reason I do what I do. The other side of the coin is about impacting the lives of the candidates that I hire. 

Many years ago, I was focused mainly on the Telecoms market in Africa. I repatriated a lovely chap in Nigeria back to his home country, Ivory Coast. Shortly after he’d moved home and started with his new company, he was kind enough to email me. He shared the positive impact that move had made on his life. Not only had this new role provided him with an increase in salary, it had reunited him with his wife and kids. 

This is perhaps an extreme example. But, when you consider how much stock we all put in our careers and finding the right role with the right work/life balance . . .
